Chapter Eight

Julie woke very early.

The birds were singing gaily, and it was not the sort of song that she knew so well in England. They woke her, and somehow she felt that it was like waking to the best concert that she had ever known. Then she got up and went to the window, to look out at the new dawn touching the mountains. The light shimmered on that icy cold snow; suddenly now it seemed that its brightness almost hurt her eyes. The mountains were tall and rugged, losing their glitter as her eyes descended to the trees and woodland and small houses as one came nearer to the hotel. Beneath the very window from which she looked she could see the loveliness of the summer here, the deep crimson and rose of flowering trees, those spires of foxgloves in pink and chalky white, and the wild azaleas. The wagons were jogging out of the village with the new day, for the first harvest of the year was being reaped. Stout village women had come to help fling the hay into the wagons, and they sang as they went.

The new day woke to azure and topaz lights on the range, to the song of harvesting villagers and the rumble of the wagon wheels on the rough fields.

Julie went and had a look at her patient, but Lady Celia was curled up and still fast asleep. By the look of things she had had a good night’s rest, and Julie went quietly downstairs. There was a rather derisive postcard from the girls in her ward.

Hope you don’t already wish that you were back with us? We could do with having you with us again, for there is chaos here.

Each of them had signed it. She would be back with them in a month or two’s time, but lots of things would happen before that month was out. For now she stood in a new world, staring out at the bewildering beauty of it. Everything is going to happen here, she thought, and maybe she would find the full plot of the first book which she had always wanted to write.

The stranger of last night had finished his continental breakfast and was coming out of the dining-room.

‘You’re early,’ he said.

‘It is too lovely a day to miss. I could not lie on sleeping when there was so much to see, and I wanted to come down. What are you going to do?’

He said that he was going for a long walk, he knew this part of the world well, and loved it.

Then he went off to fetch his things. Julie spoke to the young German woman who was waiting at table.

She said, ‘’E kom ’ere oftens. ’E write the books, they say. I belief ’e write a big book about Igls and every zing in it.’

‘He is married?’ and she did not know why she asked it.
